CHAPTER 11

ANDREI

Life had been one long blur of hard work for Andrei over the past couple of weeks. Ever since the incident at the Nymph Nightclub and Mermaid Lounge, the Sokolov crime family had been ramping up security across the state of Nevada. Mikhail was expanding the empire his father had established before him. That meant an endless number of businesses to look after, and too many managers, doormen, bouncers, security guards, and foot soldiers to check in with. He had a lot of responsibilities, and he was not going to let any of them fall through the cracks.

Not even with the biggest distraction of his life hanging over his head.

All he could think about was Inessa. In between missions, he would find himself driving in his car from one location to the next, barely paying attention to the road before him. Inessa’s beauty, her softness, her scent, her taste; it all lingered in his mind so vividly. Most memories tended to fade over time. His recollections of home were now sepia-tinted and slightly fuzzy, like an old-time movie he saw once as a child.

Inessa was so bright in his thoughts, she felt more than real. He could close his eyes and see her looking up at him with those gorgeous eyes full of curiosity. He could almost smell her feminine aroma and taste her lips. It was as if he could reach out and grab her.

But of course, when he opened his eyes again, she wasn’t there. Andrei told himself it was for the best. On top of his busy schedule, Andrei had been avoiding the Sokolov Estate. When he did have to attend a meeting with Mikhail or the other men, he suggested meeting up at times when he knew Inessa was likely to be out of the house. He thought that by avoiding her, he could inoculate himself against the magnetic pull she had over him. He had to break it off, cold turkey style, and just carry on like nothing had ever happened between them.

So he scheduled meetings while she was in class. He eagerly accepted an interrogation that brought him all the way to Reno. He led a training program for new recruits in the middle of the desert. He stayed out all night working hard and came home only to sleep.

It didn’t work. She was always on his mind, no matter how far away he ran. And when he fell asleep, his dreams betrayed his true feelings. He dreamed about holding Inessa and woke up frustrated, wishing he could roll over in bed and see her sleeping peacefully beside him, so he could wake her up with lovemaking.

Andrei had not been home in a few days. Business had carried him all the way to the California border to carry out another interrogation of a convenience store owner suspected of harboring sympathy for the Baranovs. It was a long one, nearly twenty-four straight hours of brutally interviewing the man while he was bound to a chair in a dark room.
